Pivot Table – Summary of Terms

I needed to summarize the number of times that search terms were used. The Pivot Table worked great:

In Excel, get your data into the appropriate column(s) with Headers
Under Insert, select PivotTable
Select the Header field to report on, in this case I added Search Term to both Row Labels, and Values.

Polleverywhere.com is the cell phone/clicker app we experienced at the Boston Campus Tech conference… it’s cloud based, free for up to 30 students… seems to be a modern app.

Add Facebook to a regular Site

Hadn’t thought about this much, because… well frankly, Facebook just doesn’t cross my mind very often. Anyway, I noticed that someone had a FB comment feed on their regular website that was based in Facebook (it was an article David shared, funny in it’s own right)… So I thought cool, you can get some of the power of Facebook connections in other places.

Extracting PowerPoint elements

Extracting images and audio from a PowerPoint is not too hard:

Rename the file from filename.pptx to filename.zip
Extract the ZIP
Get your graphics and wav files from the Media folder within the zip

Ideas for DEE from CampusTech 2011

faculty advising board (functions as sounding board, communication with the rest of campus)
public work encourages students to work harder because other students, and potentially future employees will see it. Same principle as the cohort experience.
Have students use screencast-o-matic to share a presentation. Students can post them to YouTube. Then students can watch each others work, and can improve upon each others ideas.
Google sites can function as a nice public wiki (allows for lots of integration of other items)
Video editing has been compared to the skill of reading and writing. Will one day be a given. Small short visual messages can have impact which produce empathy.
Why is there no google LMS?
“Well, you want too much customization.”
How does google coordinate it’s innovation?
“We communicate A LOT! Wikis, email, vid conf.”
Learning from data… Fusion tables
Yes, cloud tools may fold, and you’ll just switch, and find another. Make your own backups.

Part 1. Jayme Jacobson & Jenine Cordon, University of Idaho
Students engage more fully with ePortfolios that belong to themselves rather than institutions. We have recently developed a unique method for creating ePortfolios that leverage the powerful tagging and category functions of WordPress. The blog tool functions as a collection and filtering engine, routing evidence to related outcomes-based pages. These outcomes — institutional, personal, program, and course – subsequently appear hierarchically nested within the site’s navigation. Students can select evidence for their target audience and write their reflective narratives in the top-level pages. The system allows for endless variation, personalization, and modification as the student moves through and beyond the institution.

The open-source WordPress has emerged as a leading blogging tool and content management system. A number of schools have found that it can also be a powerful platform for e-portfolios. This hands-on workshop will provide participants with a thorough overview of WordPress, and how it can be used for e-portfolios. As part of the workshop, participants will build their own WordPress-based e-portfolio.
